France Homemade Yogurt Cake

In France, yogurt cake is not a dessert for special occasions. It is a cake made on a weekday, often without a recipe card, measured by habit rather than accuracy. The yogurt container becomes the unit. The method is remembered, not written down.

It is one of the first cakes many people learn to make — and one they return to for decades.

It asks only for a bowl, a spoon, and a few ingredients already in the kitchen. Because of that, it gets made — again and again.

This is not a cake you perform. It is one you live with.

Tool Edit

Every practice here unfolds through objects chosen for restraint and permanence. These are the tools we return to time and again – not for trend, but for fidelity to practice.

The Ritual: French Yogurt Cake

Ingredients (traditional method uses the yogurt container; standardized measurements included)

  • 125 g plain yogurt (½ cup)
  • 200 g sugar (1 cup)
  • 190 g all-purpose flour (1½ cups)
  • 120 ml neutral oil (½ cup)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 10 g baking powder (2 tsp)
  • Pinch of salt

(Optional: lemon zest or vanilla)

In France, the empty yogurt container is often used as the measuring unit. Standard measurements are provided here for consistency.

    Method

    1. Pour yogurt into a bowl.

(If using standard measurements, follow quantities listed above.)

    2. Use the empty container to measure all remaining ingredients.
    3. Add eggs, sugar, oil, then flour, baking powder, and salt.
    4. Stir until smooth.
    5. Pour into a greased pan.
    6. Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 30–35 minutes.

Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve plain, or with nothing more than coffee.

This cake does not need frosting. It does not improve with complexity. Its value lies in how often it appears — on kitchen counters, wrapped in paper, eaten the next day without ceremony.

Nothing decorative. Nothing excessive. You don’t need better baking skills. You need fewer barriers.
